The place Where two great rivers Mtkvari and Liakhvi meet each other; where the old city of Georgia - Gori was founded on the beautiful valley of Kartli. First information about it you can be found in the annals of the 7th century BC. Everything smells here of antiquity.
The ruins of a medieval defensive fortress- Goris Tsikhe overlooks the town and is located on a mountain slope. It is believed that David the Builder built it on the site of the old defensive structures. Later many kings of Georgia were engaged in its reconstruction.

A few kilometers away the old city carved into the rocks – Uplistsikhe attracts us. It is situated on the left bank of the Mtkvari River and is one of the oldest populated place, mention it in the annals 1th century BC and the city existed during 10 centuries. The total area is about 9.5 hectares. The person who visit this place will be impressed by streets, houses, towers, tunnels, squares, wine cellars carved into the rocks. Many unique items of bone, gold, silver, copper and ceramic were found here by archaeologists. Looking at these items you will immediately guess that civilization since ancient times has been at the highest level. There are traces of paganism. But after the adoption of Christianity people built here the churches, some of them have been preserved as ruins. Many of them are recovered. Uplistsikhe-has been one of the major cities for a long time, but later a feudal city had lost its purpose.
One of the revered ancient monuments of Georgian architecture is a wonderful Christian cathedral - Ateni Zion. It is located not far from Gori, a few kilometers away. Cathedral lit in honor of the Holy Virgin. Cathedral in the village Ateni was erected in the first half of the 7th century. This cathedral is unique and the fact that on its walls were found unique historical, linguistic information.

The city itself was founded by the king of Georgia David the Builder in the 12th century and after that it is one of the major cities of Georgia.
